Techno Rankings

Bic Sport Ultrasport

With just a couple of events remaining, the Techno 293 Cup, Techno Formula Cup & BiC Superblaster Slalom Cup competitors are very close to seeing who wins the individual series as well as the prestigious BiC Sport UK Windsurfer of the Year perpetual trophy.

From the scores listed below it's possible to see the leaders in each of the series as well as the overall leader. It really is only last ditch endeavour that will show any significant improvements in competitors placings, with Mike Blackgrove looking pretty secure in pole position for both the 2005 Overall and also the Techno Formula titles with consistently strong performances in the Techno Formula Cup as well as using his Techno Formula to good effect in the Superblaster Slalom Series. The Techno Formula Cup has been run as part of the UKWA Free Formula fleet with competitors using BiC's excellent Techno Formula board with any rigs they choose (up to a maximum of 11.0m). This is an excellent introductory fleet for racers interested in Formula Windsurfing and indeed many ex-Techno Cuppers have moved on to race in the full UKWA Formula fleet with considerable success.

Leading the Techno 293 Cup is Ali Masters and he's looking pretty secure in the top spot. The Techno 293 Cup has been hard fought by all the youngsters and with every event counting as a scoring event, persistance is also well rewarded. Full Techno 293 Cup score are listed further down, and each competitor's best 5 results are carried forward to count towards their overall placings. The Techno 293 fleet sees large numbers of super keen kids racing for regional & national squad places. These kids are likely to be the star racers of the future, perhaps progressing onto the formula windsurfing circuit, perhaps following olympic aspirations with the new hybrid equipment. Whichever route they choose, the Techno 293 racing provides an excellent introduction to competitive windsurfing for many youngsters. The board itself is equally at home teaching beginners, used as a lightwind board for adults, used as an early planing board or a learning to sail in harness & footstraps platform. It is indeed a very versatile board and is likely to be an essential family addition for many people around the globe.

The BiC Superblaster Slalom Cup has in contrast had just 5 qualifying events this year, and with a non-event due to no wind at Poole there have been just 3 scoring events to date, hopefully the IOW will make this 4 from 5 to count. Competitors using any BiC / Tiga board have been able to enter the BiC Superblaster Series, opening the Cup to anyone using any BiC board. We have seen Techno 293's, Techno 273's, Techno Formula's, Techno 2 118's, Tiga Hyper-X's, BiC Superblasts all in action at these events. The new for 2005 BiC Superblast board lent it's name to the series as it represents a board designed specifically for blasting with 3 fantastic sizes available covering a wide range of requirements. Dan Simpson has used the Superblast 72 & 62 models to devestating effect in the Junior Superblast events while Ian Kraft has used the Tiga Hyper-X 115 and Superblast 81 & 72 in the Challenge Fleet Superblaster events. With just White-Air remaining, it's Dan & Ian that head their respective fleets, with Richard Simpson & Mike Blackgrove doing the chasing.

As ever, the Techno Cup enjoys excellent support from the UK importer. 2005 however sees a change of importer from the long standing and ever supportive Guy Chilvers to the team at Ultra Sport UK and Andy Wood the BiC Sport Brand Manager. The prizes are also a bit different this year with BiC Sport sponsored Simon Bornhoft providing coaching clinics for some of the winners, and BiC Sport Superblast boards to the Junior & Challenge fleet winners of the Superblaster Slalom Cup.

Special thanks to the UKWA for supporting the BiC Sport initiatives to encourage accessible racing through the Techno Cups and the Superblaster Slalom Cup, to Ultra Sport UK for their work and support promoting the UK competition scene, and to all those competitors putting their BiC / Tiga boards through their paces at events all over the UK.
